SFSU Student Center, 50th Anniversary, Visual Identity and Campaign
Role: Creative Lead, Designer, Copywriter
This visual identity and campaign commemorate the 50th anniversary of the San Francisco State University Student Center (known as Cesar Chavez Student Center at the time). The building was commissioned following the 1969 student strike to serve as the student union’s headquarters, and was completed in 1975.
As the creative lead, I began by exploring our organization’s archival materials and the University archive to craft the project's overall aesthetic. Collaboration among our staff was essential to developing a culturally rich and historically grounded visual identity for the 50th anniversary. April Joy Nietes-Rudnick and Mark Jaramilla served as key consultants, offering invaluable insights into the building’s history and the organization’s culture, both before and after the official merger of the Student Center and Associated Students, the campus student union.
Additionally, input from the 50th-anniversary planning committee played a vital role in shaping the identity, ensuring their perspectives guided every stage of the design process.
